In All and Through All- Joy!

My weekend devotional from Journey Magazine (Lifeway Press, 2019 July) focused on a familiar passage in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 

These verses are included as part of the final instruction Paul gives as he closes his first letter to the church at Thessalonica. The ESV study Bible notates this section of scripture, 4:12-22, as final instructions as to how the body of believers there should conduct themselves in life and relationships. Partners in Joy

When I have occasion to write a note of thanks, quite often Philippians 1:3 comes to mind, and many times I’ll include it in the text-

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy . . .

As Paul greets the Philippians, he wants them to know how much they mean to him. In fact, they serve as a source of joy as he remembers his partnership with them and God’s good work in them. Continue reading “Partners in Joy” →

Learning Contentment

Dictionary.com defines contentment as “the state of being satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else.” In its highest and best form, the contented one is satisfied and fulfilled, at its lowest, comfortable and complacent.

As people, we know well the struggle between these two extremes. We fear the lack of growth and accomplishment; therefore, we strive to move forward- to change and achieve. This is not a bad thing. In fact it lines up with the truths from Scripture that God created us for good works (Ephesians 2:10) which He continues until they are complete. Moving On

This past weekend our youngest son moved to Philadelphia for a new job within his company.  Wally and I accompanied him on the long trek north from Charlotte, driving his car behind the truck he rented to transport all his belongings. Even though he’s well familiar with the city due to many trips there for work already and excited about this new chapter of life, my heart has been upside down as we’ve anticipated his move.

I wanted to follow the sign as we pulled out of his neighborhood. I wanted to STOP. I wanted him to STOP. Return to the familiar . . . the known community . . . the good and fruitful life God had blessed him with in Charlotte. Continue reading “Moving On” →
