Learning Contentment

Dictionary.com defines contentment as “the state of being satisfied with what one is or has; not wanting more or anything else.” In its highest and best form, the contented one is satisfied and fulfilled, at its lowest, comfortable and complacent.

As people, we know well the struggle between these two extremes. We fear the lack of growth and accomplishment; therefore, we strive to move forward- to change and achieve. This is not a bad thing. In fact it lines up with the truths from Scripture that God created us for good works (Ephesians 2:10) which He continues until they are complete. More than These?

This week I’m finishing the final Bible study assignments in Jennie Allen’s study Proven. The last session dives into John 21, as we join Jesus making his third and final appearance to his disciples before ascending to heaven. The disciples have spent the night fishing but have nothing to show for their efforts when Jesus appears on the shore. He gives instructions as to where to recast their nets, and as they obey, a harvest too big to haul is theirs to gather. They must have relished in the abundance that came from being present with Jesus again. I can almost see the fist pumps and hear them shouting, “He’s back!!” Continue reading “More than These?”

Outside My Window

At my core, I’m an introvert. I  need and enjoy moments of quiet when I can find them. I remember as a child, sitting at my bedroom window, content to watch the world outside.

And I find myself repeating this pattern even now. I go to the living room every morning for my quiet time, and if I’m not careful, time can get away from me as I gaze out the window, watching and listening to the world wake and the day dawn. Continue reading “Outside My Window”

All the Difference

In an earlier post, I relayed my love for words- how they work together in phrases and sentences, with definition and sound- succinctly making a point or relaying a truth to ponder.

The American poet, Robert Frost was a master with words, and the last stanza of one of my favorite poems of his comes to mind quite often-

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
