Remembering the Sacrifice

In recent years I’ve had the privilege to know a man I call “Q”. He immigrated from Vietnam and is now a United States citizen along with many in his family. His pride and gratitude to live, work, and raise a family in America inspires me every time we chat. His journey to citizenship required much time and sacrifice, but it’s one he values and appreciates deeply. He is devoted to hard work, including learning the language, and expects his children do the same.

In our world of flawed systems and bad news, he represents every good ideal our nation stands for and fights to pursue more effectively.

We laugh often about language confusion and traditions that he doesn’t fully understand. His questions make me think, and much of the time I come away realizing how much I take for granted. Our last conversation was no exception-

As I got up to leave, I wished him a happy Memorial Day weekend. In his unique way, he looked back and asked, “Why happy? A memorial is not happy,” once again giving me reason to pause. I smiled and then offered, “Well how about a happy first unofficial day of summer?” and “Have a thankful Memorial Day weekend.”  He smiled in agreement.

We both laughed, but I left the salon aware of just how prone I am to brush right by the true meaning of Memorial Day- remembering the sacrifice brave men and women have made so that others can enjoy living in America- the land of the free. I spend more time planning a “free day” and celebrating the onset of summer than I do remembering those who fought and died for this country.

So today, I’m pausing to pray . . . thankful God saw fit to make America my country of origin and for the men and women who gave their lives for the cause of freedom- Slide1

Grateful that God still calls men and women to serve and carry the torch for liberty today-

Asking God to cover us all with his mercy and grace.

Ever-mindful that freedom isn’t free . . . I  am Remembering the Sacrifice- will you join me?
